Four Ways to Maximise Family Time

Time often eludes us without us even realising. One minute you’re trying to stop your child from eating something they found on the floor, the next minute they’re asking if they can borrow your car. Due to the demands of modern life, families are spending less and less time together. If you feel a bit disconnected from your family, here are some tips on how you can increase quality family time:

Eat together

If you’re all at home at the same time, sit around a table and eat together. Sharing meals together gives you an opportunity to talk about each other’s lives, share news, and discuss the day’s events. It’s an easy way to connect and bond, while creating a sense of warmth and belonging. You can also involve your children in the preparation process; have them select a nutritious new recipe from a cookbook or ask them to help you set the table. Bonus tip: If you’re making freezer-friendly meals, make an extra batch and freeze it for later in the week. This will save you a lot of time in advance.

Involve the kids

If household chores are taking up most of your time, find a way to involve the kids. Assigning chores is the most industrious way of teaching responsibility and accountability to your children. Even folding laundry can give your kids a sense of purpose and make them feel like they’re a part of something greater. Don’t be afraid to get creative: compete with your kids to see who can finish the fastest, pretend to be robots while packing away the dishes or play some music and sing along while you work together. Scholastic has some great ideas on how to make household chores fun.

Create special family time

Pick one day a week and reserve it for quality family time. Although watching films is fun, rather do something that encourages interaction and conversation with your kids. Go for brunch on Sundays, have a family games night on Friday, or try something new every Saturday – whether it’s a meal, an activity, or an attraction. You’d be surprised by how many free and low-cost family activities are available in most cities. Make it a rule that everyone unplugs from their phone, so you can focus on each other. Time spent with your family doesn’t always have to be elaborate or long, but it should be “quality”.

Plan a trip

So many families have stress-filled lives – family trips are a great way to reconnect, let loose, and have fun. A holiday will not only recharge your batteries, but it will also create beneficial time for your children. On holiday, parents are focused not on work, but on play. So instead of working or doing chores, you could spend a day at the beach, explore a new town, or check out museums. This will make your children feel like they have your full attention. You can also create memories that you can cherish forever, whether you’re spending a weekend at a nearby town or at a beach resort in Spain.

Maximising family time will allow you to connect with your children, and provide them with opportunities to learn and feel acknowledged.
