The wine production of the island starts in VII century, when the romans introduce the technique for culture and treated grape. Centuries later, some important people like the Archiduque Luis Salvador or Fray Juniper Serra, were great promoters of Mallorcan wines. Both of them made sure to promote and market the Mallorca wines throughout the Mediterranean.
Actually in Mallorca four types of grapes are grown and there are many wine guides wich compare Mallorcan wines with Italian wines. At the last century, Mallorca wines, have grown a lot in quality and demand. There are 70 wine cellar, more of 500 wines brands in the island. Also exists a designation of origin (DO) as good as the Ribera del Duero or Rioja DO, best known internationally.
This designation of origin, know as DO Binissalem, works fundamentally with aurochthonous grapes species of the island called “Manto negro, Callet y Fogoney”. Many times the celler specialists mix esta Mallorca varietys With grapes like tempranillo grapes foreing , Sauvignon , Merloto , Pinot Noir, Monastrell Cabernet for Obtain the nuances and wealth wich make really different the Mallorca Wines
The island has a perfect location and weather for a wide wine production of red, white and rosé wines. Also exists specialized wineries in the ecologic wine production wich respect the environment and takes care of Mallorcan conservation land during the manufacturing and bottling process of their wines. These and other mallorca wines have won many times important international awards what highlight the quality of the island's production.
The wine's world is very active in mallorca, so if you visit the island, you will found a lot of actvities related to wine like fairs, markets, wine routes through the various wineries of the island, tastings and specialty restaurants.
