With beautiful scenery, rich culture and history, and thousands of kilometres of coastline – European islands include some of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the world. It’s perfect for both family holidays and romantic getaways. And even though family holidays are fun, there might come a time when you want to travel without the kids. If that time ever comes (maybe it’s an anniversary or a much-needed getaway), here are five European Islands you should seriously consider:
- Capri, Italy
Capri, an island in Italy’s Bay of Naples, is one of the most picturesque islands in Europe. It has the perfect mix of history and worldliness – and even though it’s attracted people from all walks of life (Roman emperors, Russian revolutionaries, and Hollywood stars), it still retains an unspoilt charm. If you’re not having lunch at a swish cafe, or tanning on Faraglioni Beach, then take a trip to the Blue Grotto (a sea cave with electric blue waters). This is one sight you don’t want to miss.
- Mykonos, Greece
What Ibiza is to Spain, Mykonos is to Greece. It's popularly known for its summer party atmosphere, but also has amazing beaches and charming architecture. If you’re ready to let loose, this is the place to be – Mykonos is one of the liveliest European islands. Enjoy a seaside dinner at sunset, party with the rich and famous, or take a dip in the crystal clear waters. If you want to get away from the crowd, soak up some sun at Ftelia Beach, located 10 km east of Mykonos town.
- Madeira, Portugal
Madeira, a Portuguese island in the Atlantic, is known for its namesake wine and sunny weather. If you’re not going for the beaches, go for the culture, amazing hiking possibilities, and delectable gourmet food. It’s capital, Funchal, is a modern and cosmopolitan city with top-class restaurants, watersports, and stunning beaches – giving you the best of both worlds. We recommend renting a car for a day and taking a road trip. Stop over at Pico do Arieiro (you can hike or drive up) and soak up the magnificent views of the mountain top.

- Fuerteventura, Spain
Fuerteventura, the second largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, lies just 100 km from the African coast. This stunning island has year-round sunshine and some of the best beaches in all of the European islands. It’s also the perfect destination for watersports, especially surfing, windsurfing, and waterskiing. Marvel at the immense volcanic landscapes, explore the island's cuisine in a village restaurant, or take a long walk on one of its pristine beaches. It’s easy to forget everything and walk along along the shore – especially when that shore goes on for 150 km.
- Majorca, Spain
Majorca, the largest island in the Balearics, is known for its stunning beaches, lively towns, and beautiful landscapes. Palma, the island’s capital and largest city, is the perfect base for exploring some of the island's hotspots – unspoilt stretches of coastline, watersports, chic restaurants, and a thriving arts scene. You could also visit one of the island’s wineries and sip on Majorcan wine, take a drive along the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, or marvel at the marine life in the island’s crystalline waters. There is always more to discover in Majorca – and every corner is just as beautiful as the next.
