The streams of Mallorca are a perfect place for practicing torrent descend as a sports or leisure activity, but also for the research of biodiversity. When we descend a torrent, for whatever reason, we are unknowingly generating an impact that may be significant or negligible, depending on our behaviour.
For this reason, throughout this summer, the University of the Balearic Islands together with Ferrer Hotels, in collaboration with the Service of Species Protection of the Balearic Islands Government, have carried out the I Ferreret Conservation Workshop, a training activity aimed at those who frequent the torrents of the Serra de Tramuntana, where our beloved Ferreret lives.
During the two days, the participants received a training on the best practices for torrent descend, and how the people who frequent these torrents can contribute in the conservation of the ferreret and other species characteristic for these fragile ecosystems.
A total of 25 participants from the Balearic Mountaineering & Climbing Federation and various hiking clubs, as well as mountain guides, have learned about the main threat factors, placing a great emphasis on the presence of the viperine snake. This species was introduced in roman times being the main cause for the threatening situation of the Ferreret today.
These kinds of activities represent an advancement for actions regarding the conservation of the Ferreret. As a result of this workshop, a network of collaborators was created, which will quickly identify the presence of the viperine snake in the torrents inhabited by Ferrerets.
Ferrer Hotels wants to thank the lecturers of the Ferreret Conservation Workshop for their dedication and professionalism, especially Dr. Samuel Pinya, Ecology Professor at the University of the Balearic Islands, Mr. Joan Mayol and Dr. Eva Moragues from the Service of Species Protection, and Mr. Xavier Manzano from the Balearic Institute of Nature.
