Watersports in the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands’ warm Mediterranean climate, enchanting coves, and wide selection of beautiful beaches make it the ideal place for watersports. From diving into the crystal-clear waters, windsurfing against favourable winds, or sailing the calm seas – here are some of our favourite watersports:

Scuba Diving

There are about 80 different dive sites around the Balearic Islands for both beginners and expert divers. Divers can choose to dive from Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. The dive sites boast some of the most dramatic seascapes – shipwrecks in pristine waters, enchanting caves and caverns, as well as boulders and limestone cliffs. Majorca and Menorca have beautiful caves with stalactite and stalagmite formations, Isla Tagomago in Ibiza has the largest shipwreck in the whole Mediterranean Sea, and Formentera has some of the clearest waters in the world. Divers will receive expert advice from fully qualified instructors, as well as full equipment hire.

Flyboarding

Channel your inner superhero with the hottest new watersports craze in the Balearic Islands. Flyboarding allows you to soar up to heights of 7 metres as you control elevation and practice steering. This is how it works: The flyboard is connected to a powerful jet-ski, which provides the thrust to push you up to 7 metres up into the air. The jets under your feet provide 90% of the propulsion, while the jets connected to your hands are used for stabilising your flight (think Ironman). This sport is more popular in Majorca, but it can also be found in Ibiza and Menorca.

Jet-skiing

Feel the wind in your hair as you glide across the beautiful Mediterranean waters at high-speed. Jet-skiing is quite common at many beaches, with some of the best tours offered in Mallorca.  There are even championships for professionals around the Balearic Islands. No licence is needed for jet-skiing, but the following regulations must be observed: Participants must wear a life-jacket and keep a minimum distance of 250 m from the beach, 50m from cliffs, and 100 m from other jet-skis. An experienced instructor will provide important instructions about safety and how the jet-skis operate. You can either choose to go solo, or alongside a friend or your instructor, depending on your confidence and experience.

Snorkelling and Sea Scootering

Swimming on or through a body of water while being able to marvel at beautiful marine life is a magical experience. Snorkelling is a popular activity for watersports lovers, especially in the azure Mediterranean waters of Majorca, Menorca, Formentera, and Ibiza. If you want something a bit more thrilling than snorkelling, you can try Bladefish sea scootering in Ibiza. A Bladefish sea scooter is a revolutionary hand-held device that will propel you through the crystalline waters. You’ll feel like a mermaid as you twist and turn under the shallow waters of Ibiza's San Antonio coast. Your instructor will include a wetsuit, snorkel mask, and a safety briefing.

Windsurfing

Mallorca is a wonderful destination for windsurfers, it has the highest wind probability in all of the Mediterranean. In fact, many international windsurfing competitions have been held here, including the Mallorca Surf Action. The best spot to practice windsurfing and kitesurfing is in the sheltered Bay of Pollença. Beginners can enjoy safe, protected conditions, whilst experienced surfers can revel in stronger winds and waves just further out. Adjust your sail, find a balance on your board, and let the Majorcan breeze help you glide across the turquoise waters.

Kayaking

Kayaking is a great way to explore some of the Balearic Islands’ most beautiful, but inaccessible, bays. You’ll feel a rush of excitement and adrenaline as you set off across the wide, shallow bays, while still feeling safe amidst the calm, unspoilt waters. You can go on your own, or with a friend – kayaking is one of the easiest watersports that doesn’t require any experience. Menorca, Majorca, Ibiza, and Formentera are all equally great spots for sea kayaking – all boasting giant cliffs, enchanting caves, and other hidden spots only accessible by kayak or canoe.
