With miles of sandy beaches, water sports, and clear azure waters – Mallorca is a fantastic destination for a summer holiday. However, since it’s a year-round destination, it’s pretty spectacular in winter too. In fact, it might even be better (depending on what you want to do). Sightseeing in Mallorca is best during the wintertime – the sun isn’t scorching hot, which means you can do your rounds without breaking into a sweat every five minutes. Here are some of our favourite things to do and see:
- The Serra de Tramuntana
The Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a mountain range that runs for 88km from Andratx to Pollenca. The landscape is beautiful and wild, entangled with limestone peaks and adorned with pine forests, olive groves, and spring wild flowers. You could take a drive along the mountain range and admire the stunning views, or you could explore it by taking a hike. The mountains are best seen slowly, on foot. If you’re driving, we recommend the route from Valldemossa to the red brick village of Deià.

- Palma Cathedral
Palma Cathedral, more commonly referred to as La Seu, is the jewel in the crown of Mallorcan architecture. Not only is it a Mallorcan attraction, but it’s also one of the most popular Gothic buildings in Europe. Highlights of the cathedral include the stunning rose windows, the imposing Bell Tower, the Mirada Portal, the magnificent choir area, and the altar (located beneath a wrought-iron canopy designed by Gaudi in 1909). Twice a year you can discover the famous Spectacle of the Eight Show, a spectacular display made just by sunlight. At 8am, the light of the rising sun breaks through the stained-glass rose window (the largest in Europe), and a multi-coloured rose is projected onto the opposite wall directly below the other rose window. This unique phenomenon attracts more visitors who want to witness the spectacle eight, year after year.
- Bellver Castle
Palma has some of the best sightseeing in Mallorca. The Bellver Castle is located 3 km from Palma's city centre, dominating the bay and a large part of Mallorca. This 14th-century landmark is the only castle, in all of Spain, with a circular design. The castle has three large towers that surround a central courtyard. The beautiful courtyard has a ground floor and a Gothic-style upper level. Once you reach the roof, look out over the city and the bay for one of the most beautiful views in Palma. After all, Bellver means 'lovely view' in Catalan.
- Valldemossa
Located in West Mallorca within the Tramuntana mountain range, Valldemossa is one of the prettiest villages on the island. Get lost in the narrow streets and lanes, lined with beautiful green plants and flowers. Valldemossa is rich in history and culture – Polish composer Frederic Chopin spent the winter here in 1838/9, and it was the birthplace of the island’s saint: Santa Catalina Thomas. The town offers quite a few cafes and restaurants (try the ‘coca de patata’ at one of the local bakeries). Valldemossa is also a great base for hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers.
- Cuevas Del Drach
Located on the east coast of Mallorca, Cuevas Del Drach (Caves of Drach) is one of the island’s most popular attractions. The stalactite and stalagmite-filled caves have a horizontal extension of about 1,200 metres and a maximum depth of 25 metres (below ground level). It’s also home to one of the largest underground lakes in the world: Lake Martel. Visitors can take a tour, which includes a boat ride on Lake Martel and a classical music concert played by a quartet. After the tour, we recommend having a Mallorcan lunch in Porto Cristo.
